Skinner was a behavioral scientist who studied what happened when rats were given cheese when opening doors on boxes. The rats who got cheese when they opened a box were more motivated to open a box than the rats who didn’t. But the most motivated rats were the ones who got cheese some of the time when opening a box. This intermittent reinforcement of behavior is exactly what happens when you’re playing a slot machine.
